The definition is an evolving one; some rodents, reptiles, and amphibians have become firmly enough established in the world of animal fancy to no longer be considered exotic. Sometimes any unique or wild-looking pet (including common domestic animals such as the ferret and the domestic rat) is called an exotic pet. "Exotic" may also be used for a species which is non-indigenous to the owner's locale. Many major pet stores and service providers (such as veterinary insurance carriers or online retailers) tend to classify any animal besides cats, dogs, small birds or fish as "exotic". I have 3 ferrets I just rescued 2 that were in really bad condition. They are on the road to recovery. They are great pets and love you unconditionally. They are like a mix of a dog and a cat. Independent but loving and ready for affection. I couldn't live without them. They usually run about $150 but you can get them from the newspaper ads for cheaper or even ferret rescue groups. People say they smell bad but I guess it depends if they are neutered or spayed and how people take care of them. My ferret doesn't smell bad at all but the 2 new ones I got I think they were never bathed because they stunk big time. It'll change once they get in the habit of bathing and clean cages. Like a handfed budgerigar parakeet, lovebird, or greencheek conure from a breeder would be suitable for a child. they are $15-40 for budgies, $50-100 for lovebirds, and $150-300 for GCCs. Keep in mind Greencheek conures live around 20-30 years. 2. A tame rat. They are playful, sweet, and love to interact with people. Get 2 for company, breeders usually charge around $6 for well bred rats in any color. Do not go to a petsore unless they handle the rats themselves and can show you how tame they are. Rats shouldn't bite or run away if they are tame.
