An exotic pet is a rare or unusual animal pet, or an animal kept as a pet which is not commonly thought of as a pet. The definition is an evolving one; some rodents, reptiles, and amphibians have become firmly enough established in the world of animal fancy to no longer be considered exotic. Sometimes any unique or wild-looking pet (including common domestic animals such as the ferret and the domestic rat) is called an exotic pet. "Exotic" may also be used for a species which is non-indigenous to the owner's locale. Many major pet stores and service providers (such as veterinary insurance carriers or online retailers) tend to classify any animal besides cats, dogs, small birds or fish as "exotic". I am not sure of this, but I do believe that owning exotic and wild animals should not be allowed without state and USDA licensing. Did you know axolotl's are almost extinct? This animal is not domesticated, and unless you have had your equipment checked out by an exotic veterinarian or two to ensure that this animal would be "happy" in your possession, then I would suggest not purchasing this pet. Answered by mallory - Tue Sep 15 22:23:36 2009 Does anyone know of an exotic pet that can be leashed and legal in California, USA? Q. Im looking for a fun exotic: handleable (Doesn't stay caged all day), leash trainable (Harnesses count), and requires moderate to loose care? I live in CA, where pet laws are quite strict. I want it to be at least hand-sized, climate capable (in CA), and fun to handle. Critter, bird or reptile doesn't matter. I'm thinking either Iguana or African raven, or Maine Coon cat (I consider exotic). Asked by DragonInARabbitSuit - Mon Mar 3 01:26:40 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Englishmen. Whether or not they're "exotic" is a matter of debate. They can be handleable, but wash your hands afterwards. They can be put on a lease; in fact, many of them like it, especially if you make them call you Mistress. I've heard that they can be potty trained. As for pet laws, I suspect that California won't mind, as long as you don't let them wander off on their own. Answered by Mikk E - Mon Mar 3 01:32:45 2008 Do you have an exotic pet? Q. I have had guinea pigs and that is the most exotic I have had. I have helped the occasional hurt turtle, but only kept them long enough to take them to the vet.
