A pet is an animal kept for companionship and enjoyment or a household animal, as opposed to livestock, laboratory animals, working animals or sport animals, which are kept for economic reasons. The most popular pets are noted for their loyal or playful characteristics, for their attractive appearance, or for their song. Pets also generally seem to provide their owners with non-trivial health benefits; keeping pets has been shown to help relieve stress to those who like having animals around. There is now a medically-approved class of "therapy animals," mostly dogs, that are brought to visit confined humans. Walking a dog can provide both the owner and the dog with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction.

Local restrictions

Many cities and towns have local ordinances limiting the number of pets a person may have, and may also restrict or forbid certain pets (such as fowl or exotics). Certain breeds of dog, such as pit bulls and rottweilers, are banned in some places. Dog/other canid/wolf mixes are also banned in some places.

The cities of Berkeley, California and Boulder, Colorado have passed laws stating that people who have pets do not "own" them; rather, they are the pet's "guardian."

Condominium associations and rental properties often ban animals because of the smells and noise the animals create.

How do we encourage pet food companies to change the way they do business?
Q. Now that many of our pets have died, and many pet food manufacturers (including Purina) are recalling their products, how do we go about changing the way that pet food companies conduct their business? How do we insist that they stop outsourcing their business to suspect countries, suspect vendors, thereby endangering our precious pets? Humans will be next to be endangered by the "outsourced" food industry, mark my words.

What is the best pet insurance for cats/kittnes?
Q. I have a 4 month old kitten. I went to this fair and was introduced to VPI pet insurance but just read that it was no good. Can someone please tell me a good pet insurance place and please only answer if you have personal experience. Also tell me all I need to know about this whole pet insurance thing. I'm new to this. Thanks. I only want the best for my baby! How rude you are, I didn't even know they would do that until I read this plan. I need something to help me when I go to the Vet because I went today and couldn't pay it all and figured insurance would help. Rude.

A. Hi I'mHers, First, disclaimer: I work for Embrace Pet Insurance in Cleveland, Ohio. I'm glad you're asking questions about pet insurance for your kitten. There is so much information floating around about it and not all of it is correct. What makes a good pet health insurance policy? My opinion is straightforward: insurance is a promise to reimburse you so one of the main elements of a good policy is full and open disclosure of *everything* that is and is not covered. If you look just at price you are not getting the whole picture. I encourage you to look at major medical pet insurance (yes, it exists, our company offers it). The idea behind it is you get a plan with a higher deductible and this can dramatically lower your premium, in… [cont.]

What kind of pet would you recommend for a seven year old girl?
Q. My seven year old neice loves animals. And I know she would love to have a pet for Christmas. What would be an ideal 1st pet? I have been thinking about a hamster but wanted to get other opinions. It would have to be something small, she would love a kitty but I dont think they will allow a cat in the house all the time. I do plan to get the OK from her parents before I get her anything. I've just been trying to figure out what to get her first.

A. Fish are great, but most 7 year old girls want to hold their pets, so if she's the snuggle-up type, that wouldn't work too well. My kids have had just about every animal over the years (and still do!) -- hamsters, mice, rats, cats, dogs, fish, frogs and a rabbit. Rabbits are good pets as are rats, but they require a great deal of maintenance/cleaning, etc. and need large living habitats. Fish are hands-off as are most frogs. Frogs, lizards and turtles carry illnesses that can affect some young children's health easily. Dogs and cats require a whole family's participation. We found that dwarf siberian hamsters are great -- they're a lot friendlier and they don't nip or bite like the teddy bear and other larger hamsters do. But they… [cont.]
