Skunks are mammals best known for their ability to secrete a liquid with a strong, foul-smelling odor. General appearance ranges from species to species, from black-and-white to brown or cream colored. Skunks belong to the family Mephitidae and to the order Carnivora. There are 10 species of skunks, which are divided into four genera: Mephitis (hooded and striped skunks, two species), Spilogale (spotted skunks, two species), Mydaus (stink badgers, two species), and Conepatus (hog-nosed skunks, four species). The two skunk species in the Mydaus genus inhabit Indonesia and the Philippines; all other skunks inhabit the Americas from Canada to central South America. Skunks were classified as a subfamily within the family Mustelidae, which includes ferrets, weasels, otters and badgers. However, recent genetic evidence suggests that the skunks are not as closely related to the mustelids as previously thought; they are now classified in their own family. From Wikipedia under the

I am going through the same problem, but out in the country. Someone told me to try moth balls. Scatter a few where the skunk has been seen and replace in a few days. I was told this by a wildlife refuge, so I'm giving it a try. Apparently the skunks don't like the smell and will start going elsewhere. I found the hole I think she's living in and put a few down it. I hope she finds a home elsewhere where her stink won't bother. be careful though if you have small children that might pick up the moth balls as they are not good to touch, even for us grownups. Q. We have seen skunks around our new home, and our shed has a noticible musky skunk smell all around it. I think they may live underneath it. How can we get rid of them without shooting/trapping/catchin g them (I really do not want to get sprayed!). I was thinking of throwing mothballs all around and under it??
