Where do I get a tame silver fox?
Q. People have answered this question WRONG in the past. A tame silver fox may be obtained at The Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk. Their web-site is at Domesticated foxes were created through 50-60 years of breeding (the vast majority of silver foxes are wild) and are expensive ($2,000 plus shipping costs from Siberia!) A tame silver fox can be identified by its markins - they have grey and white fur; they have floppy ears and wag their tails (like dogs). This is due to their signature characteristic: the tame silver fox has lower adrenaline levels than the wild silver fox. According to the Institute, they may be kept in apartments and trained to use a litter box. Contact: Irina F. Pliusnina Biological Sciences PhD… [cont.]

A. You don't say which country YOU are in. Getting a 'tame' silver fox in the USA only requires you buy from a fox farm that's raising them for fur. These are foxes who have lived at least 20 generations on the farm and are not as wild as the ones who were born in the woods. There is at least one place in Canada who 'domesticated' them as well, it was written up in Natural History Magazine and Smithsonian Magazine a few years back.

Where can I purchase a tame fox (silver, arctic)? Price Range? Maybe a specific seller?
Q. Price Range? Maybe a specific seller?
Asked by Daniel - Thu Jul 16 00:18:17 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, I don't know of any breeders off hand, but I can tell you the price-range. Silver foxes range from about $250 to $400, and the arctic fox can vary greatly (because people can't decide if they're true arctic foxes or not, because people can easily lie over the internet), but between $300 - $1000, most places will sell them at $500 though.

Where can I find/ purchase a tamed silver fox? What would the price range be?
Q. My online searching has been inadequate so I'm hoping for more useful info from someone who knows better than google. Any general info on silver fox ownership would help. Thanks

A. Most 'pet' foxes come from fur farm breeders. They'd charge the price of the pelt that the fox would normally bring them. Do a google search on fox fur farms for your state Here's the normal fur producing states But others have them too, even if they're not listed. Your yellow pages phone book may have something listed. Or you can keep doing a search online, OR contact your county's agricultural agent (phone book, government pages in the White Pages).

Is it possible to purchase a tamed fox?
Q. Do they still exist?
Asked by yoshi2919 - Thu Feb 8 16:25:53 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, it is not legal to own a "wild" fox. However, you can by a "Fenic Fox." If you go to google, you can type in fennic fox and find many breeders across the United States. It is impossible to completely train, tame and be assured of a wild fox. The fennic fox looks pretty close, but on a smaller scale.

Domestic silver fox - too good to be true? Is SibFox a hoax?
Q. Now, before you go a-hating on me 'cause I want a pet fox, I would like to say that I don't really know if I want one yet. Domestic silver foxes began as a project 50 years ago in Siberia. In each generation, the tamest foxes were bred, and so on until the foxes, apparently, became adorable and tame. Here is wikipedia's take on it, if you don't believe me; Now, I heard that a company called SibFox is selling them in America. Curious, I went to check the website out. Now, they say they want the payment beforehand, you can only get a 50 percent refund, and their care sheet seems a little vague. They state that the fox can be kept "in a similar environment as a cat". Does anyone actually have experience with these foxes? Now, I would… [cont.]

A. There are fox fur farms that do sell young kits that are calm and tame, but you have to do your research. Check first to see if it's legal in your state to own one without a permit since foxes are 'wildlife', even silver foxes. Check your renters/homeowners insurance to see if you need a special rider on it for the animal, for liability's sake. Check with your city ordinances to see if they ban wildlife and exotics in your area. THEN I'd suggest going to YahooGroups and joining up with a fox group over there and talk to other fox owners. Just type in 'pet foxes' in the search box. There's Fox_Pets over there as well as WestCoastSilverFoxes and several others. Use them to network as to the best place and most resonable prices. Are there any attempts to domesticate new animals recently?
Q. I was just reading about the tame silver foxes bred in Russia, and was wondering if there are any other attempts to tame animals since? Further, I was wondering if any domestication forums exist or if people privately try and domesticate any themselves? THe link to the article is here

A. Humans throughout their existence, tried to tame animals. Even though, it is true that not all animals can become completely tame (applies to certain humans as well), it is considered that a hand-reared animal tends to be more cooperative than the one caught from the jungle (brought up by its biological parents.) Btw, nice article on tame silver foxes.

Is it possible for an australian to purchase a tame/domesticated silverfox?
Q. Russians have breed foxes to be silver and tame and domesticated, although there arent many i was wondering if anyone knows if its legal for an australian to own one and how to get one!

A. Do you realize how much work it is to own a fox? To be honest, I don't think you should get one, as you said they were "domesticated" No fox, even if its been hand raised, for generations, is completely tame yet.

Multi question animal question.?
Q. Ok,what states are Silver Foxes[tame red foxes]alowed in?If your allergic to dogs or/and cats, will you be allergic to wild cats and/or dogs? Also,is there a hypoallergenic cat?Are the allergca ones reliable?

A. I don't think you are really allowed to raise any wild fox breeds without a special permit making you say a zoo of some sort. You would most likely be alergic to them as well as it is the hair/dander that causes it mostly. However there is a cat breed that does not have the same hair dander problems that regular cats do. I saw a show on them. There is a sphynx variety that has almost no hair and works for people with allergies.

Is Sibfox.com a scam?
Q. I know there is an experiment going on in Russia with silver foxes...and they are domesticated or 'tame'. I've also seen the videos and pictures of the foxes. On google I came across a sibfox which is a website selling the tame russian foxes...but to me it looks like a scam. Are they even legal? I know some states require permits and other don't. On the website they don't have much info. on care and they don't show a whole lot of stuff about them. Btw, please NO answers saying, 'You're so stupid for even considering foxes as pets! They are wild animals and smell! They bite! Leave them in the wild!" You will be blocked and ignored! If you answer something like that you are just going to look stupid because you obviously don't know… [cont.]

A. Well, they're not a scam - they're just a very poorly run operation (in my opinion.) And I don't actually have "proof" that they're not a scam, but I've talked with them, and I've seen their foxes online, so, I really don't think they're a scam- I just don't think they run their business well... I mean, I think he really only has 2 breeding pairs, and although they are from the Russian experiment, they aren't getting any of the variety that is mentioned from the original experiment- I think his foxes are from earlier on... And, he completely over-charges for one; since he's pretty sure he's the only one in America selling them, he's got the market, so he's charging about $6000, whereas, if you can get in contact with one in Russia, they… [cont.]
