A. Get a hedgehog. I've had them, and they are wonderful creatures. Mine would play tug of war with me, and eat food from my hand, even swim in the bathtub. They are funny little things and a lot of fun. He lived for about 10 years. :)

Exotic pet.....?
Q. I am thinking about getting a new type of pet. I have narrowed it down to a chinchilla, short tailed opposum, and a hedge hog. We already have 6 snakes, a ferret, fish, 3 boston terriers, and an olde english bulldogge. We have an empty 55 gal tank and are wanting to buy something to go in it. We LOVE our animals, so it would have a great home. I also thought about a bunny, but I think they are hard to clean after. Thanks!

A. none of those three animals belong in a tank. they need a cage. it would be real cruel to put them in a fish tank. when i was young i had guinea pigs in a tank that size but all experts agree animals like that need a cage.

Do you need a exotic pet permit to own and have an axolotl in Pennsylvania?
Q. I really want one, My two roommates and I have enough to afford the axolotl cage and all necessary items to keep it healthy and happy, we even have a named picked out. But we need to know if we need a permit, because that we might not be able to afford. So my questions are; Do we need a permit for having and owning an axolotl? and if so; how much will it cost to obtain an exotic pet permit?
Asked by gomes.margo - Tue Sep 15 22:14:14 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. I am not sure of this, but I do believe that owning exotic and wild animals should not be allowed without state and USDA licensing. Did you know axolotl's are almost extinct? This animal is not domesticated, and unless you have had your equipment checked out by an exotic veterinarian or two to ensure that this animal would be "happy" in your possession, then I would suggest not purchasing this pet.

A. I have 3 ferrets I just rescued 2 that were in really bad condition. They are on the road to recovery. They are great pets and love you unconditionally. They are like a mix of a dog and a cat. Independent but loving and ready for affection. I couldn't live without them. They usually run about $150 but you can get them from the newspaper ads for cheaper or even ferret rescue groups. People say they smell bad but I guess it depends if they are neutered or spayed and how people take care of them. My ferret doesn't smell bad at all but the 2 new ones I got I think they were never bathed because they stunk big time. It'll change once they get in the habit of bathing and clean cages. A. I live in Pennsylvania, too. I wanted to get a Common Marmoset Monkey, but after doing my homework and checking with the laws and regulations I found out that it is illegal to keep ANY primate without an exotic license. The thing is, Pennsylvania is not giving out license for primates because of the well being of the human. I'm sorry, but you can't own a primate unless you do this illegally and take the chance of getting your primate taken away from you and authenticated. Not to mention getting a hefty fine. I don't advise you to do this illegally, for the primates safety.

Which states allow people to have an exotic pet?
Q. Which Exact states allow people to have an exotic pet, and could someone please list them, and could you also tell me some good exotic pet dealers. Thanks! which state will allow people to have an exotic pet, and sould some one please list all the states that do and don't allow you to. thank you!

A. It varies by state, county, and even township. And of course, by animal. They may be legal but require special permits or licenses. Once you have a specific type of animal in mind, contact your County rep, or go to town hall to get all the ordinances. Before you get your new exotic pet, PLEASE make sure there is a local vet willing to treat that type of animal. Many vets will not see exotics, or will charge a very high fee just to walk in the door.

A. I live in Canberra, Australia and have found that I have had similar situations. I cannot get 'short-necked turtles' cos they can go feral in my suburb, it's probably the same reason for you. The law would of changed since you were in kindergarten.

Does anyone know of an exotic pet that can be leashed and legal in California, USA?
Q. Im looking for a fun exotic: handleable (Doesn't stay caged all day), leash trainable (Harnesses count), and requires moderate to loose care? I live in CA, where pet laws are quite strict. I want it to be at least hand-sized, climate capable (in CA), and fun to handle. Critter, bird or reptile doesn't matter. I'm thinking either Iguana or African raven, or Maine Coon cat (I consider exotic).
Asked by DragonInARabbitSuit - Mon Mar 3 01:26:40 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Englishmen. Whether or not they're "exotic" is a matter of debate. They can be handleable, but wash your hands afterwards. They can be put on a lease; in fact, many of them like it, especially if you make them call you Mistress. I've heard that they can be potty trained. As for pet laws, I suspect that California won't mind, as long as you don't let them wander off on their own.

A. Chinchillas Costs: $150-$190 @ Pet stores $150-$350 @ breeder I would suggest going onto Pet Finder, Kijiji, Craigslist or something of that sort. There are many chinchillas that need homes and the owners are willing to give them away for free! Ferrets are very cute and playful! Turtles/Tortoises are amazing if you ask me. And really if you play with them everyday they will be used to human interaction. They are very cool animals. Cost depends on what type you want. You may not be into amphibians, but you should just go to this website and look at them. There are some that are really adorable! Sugar Gliders cost $80-$200 dollars. Depends who you purchase them from. You could also look at Pet Finder and other websites for them. Degu- [cont.]

In Washington State would the exotic pet laws be overturned if the city doesn t have a law against the pet?
Q. I was just wondering because In Bellingham I checked the laws of the city and they only restrict a few exotic pets Bellingham No person shall possess within city limits a lion, tiger, bear, gorilla, lynx, cougar, jaguar, coyote, or venomous snake, or any other native species to Washington. Would their be any loop holes around the state law?
Asked by forgotton_silence - Thu Apr 15 16:32:05 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The state also has a law about exotic pets and states that no person may possess or breed a potentially dangerous animal after July, 2007. A potentially dangerous animal includes but not limited to Large cats, wolves, bears, hyenas, non-human primates, elephants, alligators, crocodiles, water monitors, crocodile monitors; and various species of venomous snakes. The city's law is irrelevant if the animal is potentially dangerous.

Ideally you should get 2 chinchillas as they will get lonely and depressed on their own. Q. I want a monkey, or maybe an exotic feline. I am willing to take any classes/etc. :( sometimes i really hate living in america... Anyone know how much you can be fined for owning an exotic pet?

A. They do not issue licenses for exotic pets. CA is a ban state that bans most species of exotics. If you get one illegally, it will be confiscated and possibly destroyed. If you want one, move to where they are legal. 671. Importation, Transportation and Possession of Live Restricted Animals. (a) It shall be unlawful to import, transport, or possess alive animals restricted in subsection (c) below except under permit issued by the Department of Fish and Game. Permits may be issued by the department as specified herein and for purposes designated in Section 671.1 subject to the conditions and restrictions designated by the department. Except for mammals listed in Fish and Game Code Section 3950 or live aquatic animals requiring a permit… [cont.]

What kind of exotic pet do you have and why do you think its the best?
Q. Im not talking about dogs and cats here. I'm always wanting a new pet and I wanted to see what you think is the nicest to own. I'm always looking for something as longed lived as I can get cause I want it with me as long as possible. What kind of pet do you have? What makes that certain pet special in your eyes? Thanks for responses. Fish responses are welcome too.

A. Well, I have 2 Russian Tortoises, they are special to me because not many people own them and they live to be 80 years old. Also 1 of them is 20 years old! That's older than Me! I also have a Goffin Cockatoo named Elvis. He is special because in the wild, they are virtually extinct. The only ones still alive are those bred in captivity. To have an extinct animal reminds me everyday of what I'm fighting for. Here's a pic of Elvis:
