Chinchillas are crepuscular rodents, slightly larger and more robust than ground squirrels, and are native to the Andes mountains in South America. Along with their relatives, viscachas, they comprise the family Chinchillidae.

The animal (whose name literally means "little Chincha") is named after the Chincha people of the Andes, who once wore its dense, velvet-like fur. By the end of the 19th century, chinchillas had become quite rare due to hunting for their fur. Most chinchillas currently used by the fur industry for clothing and other accessories are farm-raised.

How will my chinchillas react if I bring in a new chinchilla?
Q. I have 2 chinchillas right now (male & female) The male is fixed, and they have been together for 4 years or so now. I would like to introduce a new female to them and have her live in the same cage. How will they react and how will I go about doing this?

A. Chinchillas are social animals, so they prefer to live in groups. However, i actually tried to introduce a new chinchilla into the cage with my two that had been together for several months. After many attempts, i ascertained that they were never going to get along. So now they are living in separate cages. The best way to go about integrating the female into the old population is to put her cage next to the cage your two old chinchillas are in. After letting them be around each other for about a week, you can slowly start letting them spend time together in the same cage. Make sure you monitor their time together. I'm not one hundred percent sure about this because all of my chins are males. Good luck!

How do I clean the drool off my chinchillas fur?
Q. I just had my chinchillas teeth shortened and his fur is still wet from the drool that he was expelling while his teeth were still long. What do I do to get his fur back to normal? Do I just wait for it to grow back? Do I continue to give him regular baths?

A. make sure your chin has plenty of dust baths for the next couple of days, if it doesn't dry get someone to hold your chin and then you need to stand about a metre away and blast the chin with cold air from your hairdryer for a couple of seconds at time to try and get rid of the excess moisture but this is a last resort measure as this is very stressful for your chin.. This is a serious answer, this is something breeders do when the chins get wet and I have done this before because one of my chins managed to get in the kitchen sink!!

A. well thinking that your talking about the rodent and not a bird, chinchillas chew everything. if he/she is chewing on stuff that can be coverered with cardboard or some kind of barier, i would try that. if that doesn't work then i always just gently push him away from what he's chewing with a towel or something just incase he bites me thinking that i'm still the wall. this could mean that he/she is bored and you could try putting in new toys, they might investigate and stop chewing everything.
