A. It varies by state, county, and even township. And of course, by animal. They may be legal but require special permits or licenses. Once you have a specific type of animal in mind, contact your County rep, or go to town hall to get all the ordinances. Before you get your new exotic pet, PLEASE make sure there is a local vet willing to treat that type of animal. Many vets will not see exotics, or will charge a very high fee just to walk in the door.

A. There are several vet clinics listed on Hedgehog Central that deal with hedgehogs and other exotics. Since you have the option, I would visit several and see which one you feel most comfortable dealing with, rather than picking one and later being disappointed. Good luck!

A. Chinchillas Costs: $150-$190 @ Pet stores $150-$350 @ breeder I would suggest going onto Pet Finder, Kijiji, Craigslist or something of that sort. There are many chinchillas that need homes and the owners are willing to give them away for free! Ferrets are very cute and playful! Turtles/Tortoises are amazing if you ask me. And really if you play with them everyday they will be used to human interaction. They are very cool animals. Cost depends on what type you want. You may not be into amphibians, but you should just go to this website and look at them. There are some that are really adorable! Sugar Gliders cost $80-$200 dollars. Depends who you purchase them from. You could also look at Pet Finder and other websites for them. Degu- [cont.]

A. Hi Matt...in order to get an exotic pet licence you need to first learn if your state, county, town/city allows exotic pets. For the USA USDA/APHIS issues the permits and your local state, county and/or city may require additional permits. Many colleges offer courses in zoology. Here's a list of schools that have courses in zoology in the USA:

In Washington State would the exotic pet laws be overturned if the city doesn t have a law against the pet?
Q. I was just wondering because In Bellingham I checked the laws of the city and they only restrict a few exotic pets Bellingham No person shall possess within city limits a lion, tiger, bear, gorilla, lynx, cougar, jaguar, coyote, or venomous snake, or any other native species to Washington. Would their be any loop holes around the state law?
Asked by forgotton_silence - Thu Apr 15 16:32:05 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The state also has a law about exotic pets and states that no person may possess or breed a potentially dangerous animal after July, 2007. A potentially dangerous animal includes but not limited to Large cats, wolves, bears, hyenas, non-human primates, elephants, alligators, crocodiles, water monitors, crocodile monitors; and various species of venomous snakes. The city's law is irrelevant if the animal is potentially dangerous.

what would be a low maintenance small exotic pet?
Q. i wanna get a small exotic pet (i.e. a lizard, mouse, rat) but i also want it to be low maintenance and easy to take care of. any suggestions?
Asked by Joe - Sat Jan 24 19:15:26 2009 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Chinchillas are not low maintenance! - Michael. About Chinchillas: I have 2 chinchillas but they are very expensive! Ideally you should get 2 chinchillas as they will get lonely and depressed on their own. They cost between 80 to 150 each You will need a LARGE cage with lots of shelfs and height is more important than width. As chinchillas like to run and jump they need the room to do so. The cages cost about 80. You will also need to buy the following: Dust bath - 10 Dust 3 (which will last about 3 weeks) House - 10 Litter - 9 (a large bag will last 2 months) Wood to knaw on or they will develop teeth problems that can kill them Toys to occupy them. that will be destroyed and need replacing on a monthly basis. Low maintenence, fairly exotic pet, lives in a tank?
Q. Hi, my brother would really like a pet of his own that lives in his room in a tank. It would have to be as low maitenence as possible as he dosent want something that take up all his time cleaning out etc. A fish would be ideal, but he wants preferably to have a more exotic pet eg a frog? I know this is a lot to ask and good answers very much appreciated. Thanks.

A. Fish are fairly exotic and you can find a good deal of tropical fish that are freshwater fish and require attention as far as feeding and 10-25% weekly water changes. You will need a heater, a light, and a filter for the aquarium, as well as some fake plants and food. Be careful not to buy a fish because it looks small, as many can outgrow small aquariums. A friend of mine told me about a pacman frog that is relatively low maintenance that can live in a tank with some substrate, water, and live foods (crickets that are nutrient fed and dusted). They run about $15 dollars, and have some heating and humidity needs as well. So, those are some suggestions. There are a lot of websites devoted to the proper care of different animals, so… [cont.]
