The ferret is a domestic mammal of the type Mustela putorius furo. Ferrets are sexually dimorphic predators with males being substantially larger than females. They typically have brown, black, white, or mixed fur, have an average length of 20 inches (51 cm) including a 5 inch (13 cm) tail, weigh about 1.5–4 pounds (0.7–2 kg), and have a natural lifespan of 7 to 10 years.

Several other small, elongated carnivorous mammals belonging to the family Mustelidae (weasels) also have the word ferret in their common names, including an endangered species, the Black-footed Ferret. The ferret is a very close relative of the polecat, but it is as yet unclear whether it is a domesticated form of the European Polecat, the Steppe Polecat, or some hybrid of the two.

The history of the ferret's domestication is uncertain, like that of most other domestic animals, but it is likely that ferrets have been domesticated for at least 2,500 years. They are still used for hunting rabbits in some parts of the world today, but increasingly they are being kept simply as pets.

Being so closely related to polecats, ferrets are quite easily able to hybridize with them, and this has occasionally resulted in feral colonies of ferret polecat hybrids that have been perceived to have caused damage to native fauna, perhaps most notably in New Zealand. As a result, some parts of the world have imposed restrictions on the keeping of ferrets.

What is the best way for a ferret to have fun and exercise?
Q. I'm a new ferret owner. Tiko (my ferret) always wants to get out and play and run. But my house is not ferret proof. I put him in the the bathroom to run around, only to find he got out. So does anyone have any ideas on how to get a ferret out and not get into trouble?

A. You should think about ferret proofing at least one room in your house so Tiko can get to run around safely. A good place for him may be your hallway and stairs, but be warned - if he knows that bedroom/bathroom doors open he will dig at the doors to try and get in there, this will ruin any carpet you have. This has happened to me, I have 3 ferrets and my carpet is wrecked! Luckily my husband is a flooring contractor so we can repalce this easily and cheaply. Another good idea is to actually play with him yourself out of the cage, that way you can see what he's doing and keep him safe. I have old carpet tubes around my house for them to run and hide in, they also love me to shake cat teasers at them for them to try and catch, they love… [cont.]

What does it mean when a ferret has yellow gunk on its eyes?
Q. My baby female ferret had yellow gunk on its eyes. They were stuck shut. I gently soaked them with warm water so she could open them. The next day she died :(. I have two ther ferrets and am concerned it may be some sort of contagion. I have removed the other two from the cage and disinfected everything.

A. You must separate your ferrets immediately! Completely different room on the other side of the house! The sick guy needs to see a vet right away. Ferrets do not handle viruses very well at all. I just lost my one year old girl to a virus. :( She just couldn't fight it off. Have your vet start supportive care immediately. Keep in mind that hand washing is your best friend right now. Clean up the cage and toys thoroughly after the separation. It really is easier to have one sick ferret instead of a group of sick ferrets.

How can I keep my ferret from going to the bathroom in the corner?
Q. My ferret is just under a year old, and he's the most adorable, well-behaved pet I have ever met. However, he doesn't always do his business in the designated spot. I leave the door to his cage open all the time, so he can come and go around the room as he pleases. He usually runs into the cage to relieve himself, but sometimes he decides it would be better to use any of the four corners of the room. I discipline him - gently - every time he does it, but he still hasn't stopped. Anyone have any ideas?

A. I feel bad for your ferret that you are disciplining him (even gently) for normal behavior. Ferrets DO NOT have a designated potty spot. Ferrets DO 'go' in corners. You need to be a good owner and offer your ferret more litter pans! :) My ferrets 'live' in my bedroom. They have one litter pan in their cage and two for outside of the cage in their favorite corners.
